I love backpacks. They are mankind’s greatest invention. Unlike packages and cross-body bags a backpack allows to keep your hands free, it properly distributes the load over your shoulders and waist. The only thing I don’t like about rucksacks is that this isn’t what you can take to a business meeting.
Especially if you are wearing a suit and a tie. A business meeting implies having a brief case with you, however, who said that it couldn’t be as convenient as a backpack? Bobby Bizz is a transforming backpack, which makes it a perfect alternative to an ordinary backpack which is a way out in case of a business meeting.
It was quite an event when in 2016 XD Design Bobby an anti-theft backpack for everyday use appeared on the market. The backpack has a unisex design, thoughtfully made inside sections very well protected from unwanted attention – these are the properties a lot of us need during everyday commuting in a public transport, when riding bikes or traveling.
A howling success of the 1st XD Design Bobby model gave rise to the appearance of its new models and modifications. It would have been a complete fail for XD Design to stop after designing just one model. So, the company has realized quite quickly that it should continue developing the product line. That’s why several months later Bobby Compact backpack appeared on the market. It was a bit smaller version of the original XD Design Bobby backpack.
Though no matter how convenient a rucksack is, still most of them are associated with young people and sports lifestyle rather than with some business or office style.
That’s why it appears logical that a transforming backpack was designed. From a usual backpack it can transform into a minimal style brief case. It looks quite formal and with no doubt can be taken to any business meeting or office.
Now, let’s welcome – XD Design Bobby Bizz!
However, this isn’t it. In 2018 the company announced two new models – Bobby Urban and Bobby XL! These models aren’t on the market yet, so we won’t discuss them in this review.
History of the company
XD-Design is known not only for its backpacks, but for various accessories as well. Even more, the company doesn’t specialize in designing backpacks at all, though experience has proven that newcomers may surprise us sometimes.
Once Thomas Droze, a French designer who works for XD Design came to the Chinese office of the company and was very surprised to see people carrying their backpacks in front of them. It turned out, that this way they were protecting their belongings from pickpocketers, who city blocks and public places were full of.
Droze has become an author of the anti-theft backpack concept. About a year later Bobby XD Design backpack (it has got the name from how English policemen were called in the 18th century) appeared on the world’s largest funding platform Kickstarter. It has gathered unbelievable amount of money – £ 640,000 (the campaign was run from London).
Bobby Compact – a smaller and colored version of Bobby XD Design backpack entered the market after about a year of successful selling of the latter. Nowadays there are about 500 thousands of Bobby and Bobby Compact backpacks sold over the world. As for the backpack classical version, it has even become a Red Dot Design award winner.
Despite the results obtained XD Design developers decided to go the extra mile and create something revolutionary and practical at the same time.
In this review you’ll find out about XD Design backpack models and Bobby Bizz will be discussed more detailed.
XD Design Bobby – safe and convenient city backpack
Bobby backpack is a result of successful funding campaign that was started in April, 2016 on Kickstarter and Indiegogo. More than 10000 of people took part in the fundraising and they exceed the target sum (£872,607 was gathered). By the way the company didn’t delay the production process, so as early as in autumn the backers started to receive their first specimens.
At the time of presentation of the project XD Design was positioning its Bobby backpack as the one (and the only) anti-theft one.
The word Bobby has quite a lot of meanings, but in this case this is how the policemen have been called in London since 1829. It is due to Robert Peel (actually, Bobby is a nickname for Robert) who then served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and founded a Metropolitan Police Service. Before his reform there was just some private Police Service (so called “thief-takers”) and one of its tasks was to get money for criminals they catch.
- Bobby Anti-Theft backpack features cut-proof design, hidden zipper and secret pockets.
- Integrated USB Charging port
- Shockproof storage Design
- lluminating safety strips
- Water repellent fabric
The logic is simple – crowded public places are often dangerous in this respect. This is mainly due to the fact that for a pickpocketer crowds rise chances to steal something successfully and give a chance to run away unnoticed.
The concept of Bobby backpack is aimed at ensuring maximal safety and anti-theft properties.
Bobby backpack is designed so that the zipper of the main compartment (there is only one compartment at all) is hidden under a thick textile covering on the backside of the rucksack which leans on your back. This means that while the backpack is on your back no one can unzip it – they can’t even see the zipper.
Booby doesn’t have any outside pockets as well – all the contents are hidden inside, which will make any pickpocketer sad.
It is not that easy to cut, too. The thing is that Bobby backpack uses multi-layered “pie” of different fibers with a cutproof layer among them. It is made of polypropylene and it forms kind of frame protecting everything that is inside the backpack.
Besides cut&shock-proof design the backpack also has some waterproof properties, so rain won’t damage its contents as well. However, this can’t be called complete waterproofness, so we won’t recommend you to swim with Bobby backpack in a pool.
The backpack is not easily soiled at all – you can always clean it with a wet wipe. Bobby also has another useful thing such as reflectors on its outer surface.
Four-sided system of reflectors ensures equal reflection by 360 degrees so that you’ll be seen starting from 100 m distance even in the dark.
Bobby is the same interesting from inside as on its outside. The pack has three adjustable open angles:
30ᵒ — half-opened state which is more likely to be used more often (in a transport or when the backpack hangs on a chair back) – you just open a zipper slightly and get an access to its internal compartments;
90ᵒ — when the zipper is completely unzipped – it is convenient to open it like this on a table at home or at work to get everything you need from the backpack;
180ᵒ — when the rucksack is opened like this it is very handy to pack it for a long way to make sure that all the free space is used efficiently. To open it on 180ᵒ you need to unstrap textile stoppers that form 90ᵒ angle due to touch and snap fasteners.
Inside the shoulder-strap there is a small pocket where you can put some ID card, keys or headphones. There is a USB-port in the right shoulder-strap (output — 2,4А) that somewhere inside the backpack turns into a wire and you can connect your powerbank to it. Bobby even has a special compartment for the latter (quite a big one) hidden behind the unremarkable zipper.
As for the backpack inside – yes, it’s not very spacious, though most of the things you take with you every day will definitely fit in it.
Ergonomical inside compartments have enough space to put a notebook up to 15,6 inches, a powerbank, a bottle of water and other necessary stuff.
Due to the thoughtful system of load distribution you feel the backpack weight to be about 20-25% lighter than it actually is.
Bobby itself weighs 800 gr, it’s quite good-looking and multi-purpose pack: it will suit both men and women since it is designed in four colors.
XD Design Bobby Compact – the size is smaller, but it has more colors
After the big success of Bobby backpack on the market, XD Design the manufacturer from Holland has developed a new-look backpack model of a smaller size, which hit the taste of women. The backpack is designed in four bright colors – dark blue, light blue, light pink and bright yellow.
Though there aren’t so many conceptual differences between Bobby and Bobby Compact, we’ll still discuss them one by one in details.
Let’s start with the most obvious and simple — the backpack parameters and design. Both models weigh less than a kilo (850 and 820 g to be precise) and both are quite stylish and multi-purpose packs. There are actually two differences between a classical and “small-sized” Bobby — these are colors and size.
Classical Bobby backpack model is 45 х 30 х 16,5 cm, the Compact is smaller — 42 х 26,5 х 16 cm. Their internal volume differs as well. Classical Bobby backpack volume is 13 l, while Bobby Compact has a volume of 10 l. Keep in mind that this isn’t much. Though it’s quite enough for a city backpack.
The initial Bobby backpack was damn good, but still for the majority it wasn’t perfect. The thing is that when manufacturing it XD Design focused on its anti-theft properties and volume without taking care of more colors or smaller-sized backpacks available.
Classical Bobby is designed in three colors – black, gray and dark-blue, which is severe, neat, but boring. Bobby Compact solved the problem a year later by widening the severe color palette of the product line with more bright colors available. This backpack model has 5 colors: blue, pale blue, pink, mint and yellow. Due to such a variety of colors the backpack suits both boys and girls, adults and kids.

- Hidden Zippers & Pockets
- Integrated USB Charging port
- Anti-Cut Frame
- Integrated Raincover & Free shopping tote
Let’s discuss them one by one.
The first accessory that comes in Bobby Compact set is a raincover. The thing is that the backpack is made of water-repellent textile which isn’t a waterproof one. Therefore, a waterproof raincover hidden on the bottom of the backpack will provide additional protection to your gadgets in case of pouring rain.
The raincover is sewn-in into the backpack frame and it can’t be detached, but you can quickly stretch it over the pack when the rain starts. The raincover securely covers all the backpack surface only its shoulder-straps are left not covered, so it is very convenient to wear this pack with a raincover.
The second accessory is a tiny case made as a Bobby Compact lessened version. This is actually a textile shopping-bag. It can be fastened to the backpack shoulder-strap with a snap fastener. It may be a bit inconvenient at first, then you’ll get used to it.
The case is kind of a Russian nesting doll according to XD Design concept. Inside it you’ll find another additional compartment with a vertical zipper. It is very convenient to put your keys there, for example. You may put an urban-transport pass, bank card, an ID card and other cards, which you need to keep handy into the main compartment. In general, the pocket will do for any other small sized stuff.
XD Design Bobby Bizz is the best business backpack of 2018
Bobby Bizz is a business style backpack and it introduces the 3rd generation of Bobby models. Their success on the market motivated the manufacturer to design the third version of Bobby backpacks. This is a multi-purpose and usable one: it easily transforms into a brief case, which you can take to any business meeting without any doubt.
Who is Bobby Bizz designed for? It is for men who wear a shirt and a tie to work and want to look presentably. Managers, bosses, specialists who attend conferences or participate in all kinds of negotiations, job applicants during their interview will definitely see the true value of this backpack.
Bobby Bizz is a perfect solution for those who often go to business trips. Still you won’t manage to put quite a lot of things in it, therefore you’ll need a larger bag for the rest of the stuff. However, Bobby Bizz is the best choice if you need a small bag you can take into a plane with you. When walking around the airport it is also very handy to fix Bobby Bizz to your suit case handler by means of a stripe on the back of the backpack.
The backpack appearance is overstrict and neat. It is designed only in dark colors. At that its compound surface texture adds some charm, but it still has a look of a business accessory.
Frankly speaking, for me it is still difficult to say whether Bobby Bizz is: a backpack, a bag, a brief case or a knapsack.
Since as a result you get is a multi-purpose transforming backpack that has properties of all above mentioned. It is aimed more at big city dwellers and managers who actively participate in various business meetings during a day and use public transport quite often.
This is when you have to meet some business dress code requirements as well as at the same time have the ability to carry a note book, tablet, documents and other little things you need and keep your hands free.
Despite having the same volume Bobby Bizz looks more businesslike, smaller and thinner than its predecessors. It is just 10 cm thick and its height and width is 44,5 and 31 cm correspondingly. Now the backpack has a metal frame inside, that’s why Bobby doesn’t lose shape whatever you put inside it.
Such a frame has made the backpack a bit heavier: now it weighs 1.3 kg. As for the bag that you carry in a hand or on your shoulder its is quite an essential load. However, in this case a convenient handle helps us out. Actually, even two of them: one for a backpack and another one – soft and thick with a rubber soft-touch coating is for a brief case.
The anti-theft feature of this backpack is ensured the same way that in its 1st version. The backpack zipper goes along the side that is closer to the user’s back and it’s hidden under the textile stripe. It can’t be seen or opened from outside.
I must say it’s a big success to introduce two models of a very good accessory for such a period of time. Bobby Bizz is the best choice for people who spend their time in short business trips or have business meetings outside of the office, worry about the safety of their expensive gadgets, notebooks and documents they have to take with them.
Despite its design, that makes it more like a brief case for everyday use, protected against pickpocketers, still it is hard to underestimate the possibility to sling it as a knapsack, to free your hands and decrease the load, especially if you walk all day long.
At that its severe, neat and businesslike appearance will do both for men and women and it’ll look good both with a business style suits and with less formal clothes.
You can wear Bobby Bizz as an ordinary rucksack, but it can be transformed into a brief case if necessary. To do this you just have to unstrap its shoulder-straps and put them into a special pocket. After doing so you’ll be carrying Bobby Bizz by holding it soft handler. It will look great with a suit and a tie.
